Wine prevents caries?

Few people need special encouragement to have a glass of wine for dinner. Nevertheless, for those who need encouragement after all, here it is: the latest research shows that red wine may protect you from caries. To be more precise, grape seeds prevent its development.

It is assessed that caries, gums diseases and tooth loss affect from 60 to 90 % of the world’s population.

Research has shown that grape seeds contained in wine may slow down the development of bacteria in the mouth. That prompted research teams to try to establish if caries itself could be prevented, considering that it develops when bacteria inhabit the tooth plaque. The bacteria produce plaque and acid that begins damaging the tooth. Regular tooth brushing, fluoride in toothpastes and water may help get rid of bacteria and plaque, but the results are very limited. Therefore, you cannot go wrong with wine.

However, do not rush to brush your teeth immediately after having a glass of wine in order to avoid dark stains. In this way you will only increase chances of keeping them forever. The acid contained in wine may dissolve dental enamel, in which case teeth brushing will only contribute to the erosion and the stains will remain. Instead of that, you should neutralise the acid by having a glass of water and avoiding holding the wine in your mouth.
