Electronic cigarettes – are they better for your oral health?

In the last couple of years we have been witness to the decrease of the number of smokers, mainly due to effective education and anti-smoking campaigns.  In spite of the great effort to reduce the number of smokers, a large part of the population still consumes some form of nicotine. It is important to know that nicotine is harmful for your oral health. It has been proven that it causes gingivitis, periodontal diseases, caries, tooth loss and overly dry mouth.

Are electronic cigarettes healthy?

The short answer would be no, but a little longer answer would still be no!

While the long-term consequences of using electronic cigarettes still remain unknown, at this moment you should know the following about them:

The fluid that you inhale contains a lethal mixture of toxins and chemicals such as propylene glycol, herbal glycerine, acetaldehyde and other cancerogenic matters, which vary from manufacturer to manufacturer;

- All the mentioned substances can potentially cause oral cancer;

- The users of electronic cigarettes are at a higher risk of taking in toxins as compared to the users of ordinary cigarettes;

- The users of electronic cigarettes inhale more nicotine considering the larger concentration of nicotine in the fluid, and, consequently, become more nicotine dependent;

- Research has shown that some electronic cigarettes contain a chemical that can be found in anti-freeze.

Therefore, whichever nicotine alternative you use, it will always be harmful for your teeth, gums and your overall health.

For that reason we recommend that you should avoid smoking in any form. If due to smoking problems you lost a tooth or you want to check the state of your oral health, make an appointment.
